Lebanese realities star in the list of winners of Zinegoak 2023

He Bilbao LGTBIQ+ film and performing arts festival, Zinegoak, has awarded its prize list for the 2023 edition this Monday. Both the most awarded feature film and short film at the festival portray stories of sexual diversity in Lebanon. Likewise, the presence of women directors in the list of winners has been noted, since out of nine awards they have been the winners in six.
The Zinegoak Grand Prix, sponsored by EITB and with a value of 4,000 euros, has gone to the documentary ‘Sirens’of rita baghdadi. The jury has estimated that “it narrates a complex panorama of dissidence where the regime has already fallen.” ‘Sirens’ has been the winning film in the DOK category, in which the jury has also awarded a special mention to ‘Uyra, the forest has been retaken’ of Juliana Carifor “showing a worldview permeable to the context that films from a decolonial perspective”.
Regarding FIK, the winning film has been for ‘Regra 34’ of Julia Muratand in the KRAK section, related to new narratives, the award has gone to ‘anhell69’ of Theo Montoya.
The public prize, valued at 1000 euros, awarded by the people who have attended the festival halls during the last week, has been for the short film ‘warsha’ of Dania Bdeira work that has also won the Senior Jury prize.
The Youth Jury, for its part, has awarded the short film ‘perpetual happiness’ of Isa Luengo and Sofia Esteve Santoja, “because of the history it reflects and the naturalness with which it does so”. They have also awarded a special mention to ‘Typical deviation’ of Paco Ruiz.
The jury for Diversity and Human Rights has awarded the feature film ‘Who I Am Not’ of Tunde Skovran, “because it offers two different paths of intersex dissidence, still very invisible.” The jury also awarded a special mention to ‘Uyra: the retake of the forest’ of Juliana Curi“for showing with a beautiful and calm aesthetic the intersection between the non-binary trans identity and the defense of the body-peripheral territory”.
As regards the Lesbianism and Gender prize, which has a value of 1,500 euros and is sponsored by the Equality Area of the Bilbao City Council, the prize has gone to ‘Susanna House’ of Sebastien Lifshitz (Zinegoak 2021 honorary award). They also wanted to give a special mention to ‘Who I Am Not’ of Tunde Skovran.
The acting professionals have also awarded the award for Best Leading Performance in a Fiction Feature Film to Sol Mirandaof ‘Regra 34’, “for approaching very different universes in a masterful way”. And the Best Cast Performance for Alejandro Goic of ‘mutt’“for moving us with his look full of tenderness and truth”.
The ZG/PRO WIP award has been for the project ‘Armairutik plazara’ of Egoitz Arbiol Albeniz and Ibai Fresnedoproduced by Hiruki Larroxa Kooperatiba.
Once the 20th edition is over, some of the films in the official section can be enjoyed on the Filmin platform until July 5, in addition to a retrospective on the Ángeles Cruz honorary award, a special cycle on the 20th anniversary or a cycle with VOS in Basque.
