Katarzyna Chrzanowska was an extremely talented student at the State Higher School of Theater and Film in Warsaw – just a year after graduation, she was awarded the Young Art Medal and honored at the 13th Opole Theater Confrontations for her stage debut in the play “Virginity” by Witold Gombrowicz on the stage of the Nowy Theater in Poznań, where she played Alice. After a year of working in the theater, the actress received a scholarship to the Conservatoire National Superieur d’Art Dramatique Theater Conservatory in Paris. It was in the capital of France that she lived with a businessman she met in the late 1980s, Piotr Niemkiewicz, the owner of a company dealing with the conservation of monuments. In 1993, Chrzanowska gave birth to twin girls: Celina and Stefania.
When the series “Adam i Ewa” premiered in Polsat in 2000, in which Waldemar Goszcz partnered with her, the actress became extremely popular in Poland practically overnight. The drama production, in which fate brought together a 36-year-old bank clerk and six years younger Adam, who is making a dizzying career in the advertising industry, appealed to a large audience. The broadcast of the last episodes coincided with the tragedy in Chrzanowska’s private life.
Katarzyna Chrzanowska: In an instant, everything changed
During the holidays that the actress spent with her family in Crete in 2002, her husband died while diving. In an interview with the Aleteia website, Chrzanowska about what her life looked like literally three days earlier:
It was a terrifying experience. I finished work on the series ‘Adam i Ewa’. I’ve been to Crete. I was sitting on the beach talking to God. I said thank you for everything. I felt fulfilled, happy. My husband had a thriving business in France. He dealt with the conservation of monuments, he received a lot of commissions. We were the parents of wonderful 12-year-old girls. I said, ‘God, I have everything!’ I felt overwhelming bliss, I even got a little scared of it… and in an instant everything changed.
In an interview with “Gala”, the actress mentioned the loss of her beloved. – Piotr was diving, it is a very dangerous sport. There were signs before that you have to be careful. All I can say is: it was an accident. He loved this place. He was happiest there. And there he stayed. Overlooking your mountain, your beach and the sea, she said.
“Time helped to survive the loss, but it did not heal from longing, from lack, from grief”
The actress had to focus on her daughters, she also took up running her husband’s company. However, not taking over the business was the hardest part. – I had to them [córkom – red.] say that my beloved father is dead. They had left Crete a few days earlier, knowing that Dad would be back soon. At first I was worried about my daughters because they had been deprived of fatherly love. Dad gave them a sense of security, he was a role model. The lack of presence cannot be replaced with anything, said Anna Gębalska-Berekets. Two years ago, on her 33rd wedding anniversary, she touchingly wrote about Niemkiewicz:
I married for a great love, without a shadow of a doubt that we have a long way to go together. Fate wanted otherwise, we got to the 14th anniversary and then darkness came, which lasted a long, long time. The image of the world was slowly getting brighter, I began to notice contours, shapes were slowly emerging, now I see Piotr in Celina and Stefania. Time helped to survive the loss, but it did not heal from longing, from lack, from grief.
Half a year after the death of her husband, she said goodbye to the most famous screen partner. Waldemar Goszcz died on January 24, 2003 in a car accident. He was accompanied by actor Radosław Pazura and musician Filip Siejka, who survived the accident but took a long time to recover. Chrzanowska said about Goszcz:
He lived fast and intensely. I can’t get over it because I lost a great friend in him. I saw Gońek a week before his death. Then he cursed his car. He regretted ever buying it. He spent a lot of money on it, and recently he had no steady job. He had to work hard to pay the installments.
From Paris to Andalusia
Today, the daughters of Chrzanowska and Niemkiewicz are 30 years old. After some time, Chrzanowska became involved with a new man and decided to move to Spain in 2014. Interia portal: “I knew I didn’t want to live in France anymore. I had too many memories. Living in Paris, which will always be close to me, became too difficult for me. I love this city, I met the love of my life there, Piotr, I got my first film proposal, my twins were born. I’m happy to go back there, but the Paris stage is behind me.” He has a house in Andalusia.
After “Adam and Eve” she rarely appeared on the screen. In 2010, she could be seen in “First Love”, five years later in “Prawie Agaty”. However, it was not the leading roles. For a long time, the actress has been writing mainly about her dogs on social media. You can see that the welfare and rights of animals are very close to her. It is also known that in 2019 she received a diagnosis and had to undergo chemotherapy, and then suffered a severe coronavirus infection.
