He Basque director Juanma Bajo Ulloa thanked this Saturday for the tribute received at the Bajo la Luna-Islantilla Cinefórum International Film Festival, on the coast of Huelva, and joked about defining this type of recognition as “disturbing awards”.
In a press conference at the festival headquarters, Bajo Ulloa, three times Goya Award and Golden Shell at the San Sebastian Festivalhas said that when tributes begin to be received “it seems that you are in a place where you have little left”, but has specified that when they called him from a festival on the coast of Huelva for this event “it was very surprising and exciting”.
He has added that he has “very excited to support this initiative”in reference to the Huelva festival, and has called on his professional colleagues to follow his example, recalling that, when he began to create films, his family only applauded him when he premiered his short films, but it was essential that festivals of more or less weight spread their works.
The choice of Bajo Ulloa comes to recognize the trajectory of this man from Vitoria who in 1991 He stood out directing “Butterfly Wings”for which he won the Golden Shell at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and three Goya Awards, including Best New Director and Best Original Screenplay.
With his second feature film, “La madre muerta” (1993), he won the Best Direction Award at the Montreal Festival, and was nominated for a Goya for Best Direction, while in 1997 achieved great success with the “road movie” “Airbag”which became a benchmark for the public.
