When she found out about the disease, she refused to help. She entrusted her health to God. She died two years later

The whole world admired Anna German’s voice, although she herself did not have an easy life. She lost her brother at a young age, and then her father was shot. When she was at the peak of her career, she suffered a serious car accident. Since then, her life has not been the same.

The artist died over 40 years ago, but her songs “Human Fate”, “Greckie Wine” or “Dancing Eurydices” are known to almost everyone. Anna German loved people, but fate did not spare her suffering.

She was born in 1936 in Urgench, Uzbekistan. Father Eugen Hörmann was an accountant in Łódź, and mother Irma Martens came from a family of Dutch Mennonites, brought to Russia by Empress Catherine II herself. A year after Anna’s birth, her father was arrested by the NKVD and shot. Three years later, when the girl was 4 years old, the brother fell ill with scarlet fever, which led to his death. Anna, together with her mother and grandmother, wandered around the world.

They lived, among others, in Siberia and Kyrgyzstan. When her mother met Herman Perner, an officer of the Polish People’s Army, she married a second time. Herman died during the war, and Irma, as the wife of a Polish soldier, was given the opportunity to go to Poland as a repatriate. The family settled in Wrocław at Trzebnicka Street. Anna had a very close relationship with her mother. – She is a wonderful woman, she was able to cope in the most difficult moments of war. I love her very much,” she said during an interview in 1978.

She has always been interested in art. She first appeared on stage in 1960

Anna associated her future with art. She was interested in painting pictures and applied to the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław. After her mother’s persuasion, she eventually moved to study geology, but her artistic soul still showed itself. She applied to an art agency and got a job in the theater. She first appeared on stage in 1960. The angelic voice charmed the audience, which flocked to the concerts. Anna German quickly gained popularity. She played almost 40 concerts a month. In 1972, she married Zbigniew Tucholski, but several years passed between the acquaintance and the marriage. Zbigniew noticed Anna by the swimming pool in Wrocław, when the artist was reading a book. He asked her to look after his things while he went swimming. She agreed, and when he returned, they got on so well that she invited him to the concert. Zbigniew accepted the invitation and quickly fell in love with the beautiful blonde. Anna’s career was gaining momentum. In 1966, she performed at the Paris Olympia. She was at the height of her fame when it happened.

In August 1967, while returning from a concert in the Italian city of Forli, the driver of Anna German’s car fell asleep at the wheel. It hit the wall, and the force was so great that the artist fell out of the vehicle several meters away. She was unconscious, and when she woke up two weeks later, she couldn’t move. She spent four difficult months in a corset, and every breath hurt her. – The most peaceful time was when for many days I did not know what was happening to me. Then absolute stillness, the beginning of some kind of awareness, and immense pain. I had no idea what condition I was in and what was at stake. I didn’t know I couldn’t make the slightest move. Anyway, I just wanted the pain to stop for a moment. Many doubted that the artist would return to full fitness, but she managed it after three years.

Anna German returned to the stage. Soon after, she found out she had cancer

She returned to the stage in 1970 with the song “Człowiczy los”. After two years, Zbigniew and Anna got married, and in 1975 their son, Zbigniew Junior, was born. Anna’s career flourished again. She toured around the world from the United States to the USSR when in 1980 she was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. Fate once again threw a log under the artist’s feet. Anna German decided not to undergo treatment. She refused help and entrusted her health to God. The disease progressed, and two years later Anna German passed away. She died at the age of 46 in 1982 in a hospital in Warsaw.
