Before his death, Adam Zagajewski started working on his next and, as it later turned out, his last book. Although the volume has not been completed by the original author, it will be published soon. The Krakow museum announces the premiere.

is an outstanding Polish poet, essayist and prose writer. He was also a representative of the New Wave generation, and had many popular publications to his credit, including “Fire Land”, “Thirst”, “Perfect Pitch” or “Solidarity and Loneliness”. The last of them was to be devoted to the life and work of Józef Czapski. However, work on the book was interrupted by the unexpected death of the author on March 21, 2021.

was an outstanding artist of the last century. As a major in the Polish Army, he was an eyewitness to war atrocities. He wrote about difficult experiences in books, he also painted pictures. He received many awards, including The Order of Virtuti Militari, the Cross of Valor and the Order of Polonia Restituta. His life and work inspired him to be portrayed in “The Highest Man in the World. About Józef Czapski”. How :

Adam Zagajewski’s intention was to sketch the figure of Józef Czapski. (…) Much has been written about Czapski, in Poland and abroad. Despite this, it seems that we are only at the beginning of the road, the more so that only now has the truly global career of this work begun.

Zagajewski’s last book will hit the publishing market. The Krakow museum has announced the premiere

Initially, after Adam Zagajewski’s death, work on the project was suspended. Ultimately, however, the publisher hired Andrzej Franaszek to edit the long-awaited volume, which is currently in the process of creating a biography of Józef Czapski. The literary scholar enriched the book with interviews conducted by the writer with the protagonist of the title and with correspondence between them. The publication will also include poems and essays that Zagajewski created to commemorate Czapski’s achievements and extraordinary personality. Readers will also be able to admire reproductions of paintings and archives mentioned by both authors in the text, as well as afterwords and comments by the editor.

The premiere of the book “The Tallest Man in the World. About Józef Czapski” will take place on July 4, 2023 at the Museum of E. Hutten-Czapskiego at 12 Piłsudskiego Street in Krakow. On the same day, the collection will also appear on the publishing market. The meeting will be attended by Andrzej Franaszek and art critic, and privately friend of Adam Zagajewski, Jacek Waltoś.
