The study shows that there is a slow decline in religious belief and a faster decline in practice. It turns out that from March 1992 to June 2022, the percentage of people identifying themselves as believers fell from 94 percent to 94 percent. up to 84 percent When it comes to regular practitioners, i.e. those who go to church once a week or more, there was a decrease from almost 70 percent. to nearly 42 percent. In turn, the percentage of non-practicing people increased: from almost 9 percent to up to 19 percent

Why is this happening?

The study says that there are many reasons for this situation: “And the fact that the process of transmission of religiosity and religious education in the family is weakening, and that school religious education does not bring the expected results, and that big-city, highly educated social environments – and in This is what a significant proportion of young people turn to – they are already largely secularized. And the fact that religious practices were blocked by the COVID-19 pandemic.”

Many people cite the actions of the church, which they do not like, as the reason for leaving the faith: “The respondents do not like what the Church is doing, that they have alienated themselves from the Church, that the Church is a mafia organization. But it is not known what they do not like, Specific allegations against the Church concern: its meddling in politics (9 percent), the already mentioned pedophile scandals and their cover-up (5 percent) and, less frequently, excessive solicitation of money (4 percent)” – we read in the study.

They don’t want to go to religion

This trend is also visible in school religion classes, which are attended by fewer and fewer people. Students drop out of class because: they do not like the content that is given to them by priests and catechists, in the case of younger children, this decision is made for them by their parents. However, according to the announcements of the Minister of Education and Science – Przemysław Czarnek, from the school year 2024/2024, some years will already have an obligatory choice between religion and ethics.
