The Idol series was an eagerly anticipated and widely promoted production starring Lily Rose Depp and multiple Grammy Award winner The Weeknd. Viewers’ expectations were high, but after the premiere of the first episode it was known that the series was closer to a flop than a spectacular success.
“The Idol” turned out to be a failure. It will not have six episodes as originally planned
On Rotten Tomatoes, you can see how ruthless both critics and viewers were towards the production. Audiences gave the series a freshness rating of just 58 percent, while journalists rated the show only 22 percent. “This show doesn’t work on any level,” writes Deigo Batle of otroscines.com. Australian critic Craig Mathieson notes that “The Idol” “tries so much to be shocking, edgy and cool that viewers look on with sympathy.” Joyce Slaton is of a similar opinion, suggesting that the show should try to be more honest than just “cool” more often.
The production was supposed to present the dark backstage of show business, and subsequent critics instead noted in it only the fulfillment of men’s sexual fantasies. What’s more, the series announced in November 2021 was supposed to have six episodes. However, Deadline reported that the series will be one episode shorter.
“The Idol” will disappear after five episodes
On July 2, viewers will be able to watch the last episode of “The Idol”. Reportedly, the number of episodes was changed when Sam Levinson took over as showrunner from director Amy Seimetz and made his own “creative tweaks”. Despite the failure of the series, HBO does not say clearly about the impossibility of continuing the series. The website emphasizes that the final decision regarding the second season of the series has not yet been made.
