Most couples go on exotic holidays together in a luxury hotel or hide somewhere in the wilderness, in the bosom of nature. A couple of doctors from Newcastle, who got married just last week, decided to do something for the environment and the community. During their honeymoon, they clean public toilets in Glastonbury, where the famous festival is held. The toilets are considered one of the dirtiest in the area.
Young medics do it in cooperation with WaterAid – an international non-governmental organization dealing with water, sanitation and hygiene. – It’s not as bad as everyone thinks – the newlyweds betrayed in an interview with the portal. Responsibilities of newly married volunteers include, among others: washing toilets with a strong disinfectant, mopping the floor, disinfecting sinks and refilling dispensers with hand washing liquid.
It’s really funny. You talk to a lot of people because they’re so intrigued and shocked by what you’re doing
said 29-year-old Chelsea Taylor. “Volunteering in the toilets is just riskier than going to the Maldives or something,” added the groom, Jake Taylor.
We like to be adventurous and do things a bit differently. The idea of a standard honeymoon didn’t quite fit our personalities
said the 30-year-old. The couple explained that they work shifts (each on four shifts a week), live on a campsite with other WaterAid volunteers, and are provided with meals as part of their voluntary service. Chelsea added that she met her future husband at a charity event at Newcastle University and the first topic of their conversation was the work of WaterAid. “It’s like destiny cleaning toilets for them on our honeymoon,” she said jokingly.
As part of their honeymoon, they went…to clean the toilets. “People Think We’re Crazy”
“People are very shocked when we tell them what we’re doing for our honeymoon,” she said. She added that the WaterAid mission “means a lot to them” and that staying in Glastonbury for the festival is “like another world”. “You feel so happy,” she said. “We wouldn’t want to spend our honeymoon anywhere else,” she said.
– We were always joking about meetings via toilets and WaterAid. QI even mentioned the toilets in our wedding speech, 30-year-old Jake confided to the portal. The couple planned their wedding to coincide with this event.
“People think we’re crazy and say it’s the most unusual honeymoon they’ve ever heard of, but it’s definitely not as bad as it sounds.”
