The Voivodship Inspectorate for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk received an anonymous report on illegal waste management. A resident of the Gdańsk poviat was to set fire to and bury them on private property. Using a drone, inspectors selected a potential waste collection site and went to the 50-year-old’s house.

Radosław Rzepecki, deputy of the Pomeranian Voivodship Inspector for Environmental Protection in Gdańsk, took the floor. – The excavator uncovered a layer of soil, which revealed buried waste in the form of rubble, plastics, roofing felt and eternit, glass, burnt big-bags, animal bones – he quotes. Further proceedings in this case will be conducted by the mayor. It will be aimed at issuing an order to remove waste from a place not intended for this purpose. The resident is threatened with a fine of PLN 1 million. – When imposing a fine, numerous premises will be taken into account, including a threat to life, people, as well as the environment or the type of buried waste – explained Rzepecki.

Can you burn and bury garbage? The rules are clear

The regulations in force in Poland prohibit the burning of garbage. Storing waste in places not intended for this purpose and burying it is considered a crime under the Penal Code. The administrative fine for the collection and processing of waste is mentioned in art. 194 on waste. Its amount is decided by the Voivodship Inspector for Environmental Protection.

An administrative fine is imposed for waste collection or waste processing without the required permit referred to in Art. 41 the competence of the authorities in matters of permits for the collection or processing of waste. The fine is not less than PLN 1,000 and may not exceed PLN 1,000,000.
