The documentary “Take Care of Maya” was directed by Henry Roosevelt, who previously made productions such as “Tough Guys”, “Sixth of June” and “Native Boy”. The creator of the latest project gave voice to the heroes of history, and the tragic story of the fate of the Kowalski family contained in the film is told in its own words.
“Take care of Maya.” What is the new Netflix documentary about?
It’s 2016, 10-year-old Maya Kowalski was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital with abdominal pain. The parents informed the doctors that their child suffers from a rather rare disease – complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), which causes chronic muscle pain. The girl’s mother, Beata Żurawska, who moved to the United States from Poland and worked as a nurse, noted that ketamine relieves suffering.
The unknown method of treatment alarmed the doctors. In accordance with the procedures, the medical staff informed the service about the situation, and Maja’s mother was accused of mistreating her daughter. In addition, an expert on child neglect, Dr. Smith, believed that Beata may suffer from Munchausen syndrome and cause the child to be ill on purpose.
After separating from her parents, Maya continued to suffer and her symptoms did not go away. Moreover, the doctor who had previously cared for the girl confirmed that he had recommended the parents to administer ketamine, thereby proving the innocence of the child’s mother. Despite this, at the end of 2016, the court made a tragic decision. Beata and Jack lost custody of the child, as a result of which the 43-year-old Polish woman fell ill with depression and committed suicide. Before taking her own life, she wrote a message to her loved ones. “Please take care of Maya and tell her every day how much I love her. I can’t stand living away from my child and being treated like a criminal,” she explained.
After Beata’s death, Maya was taken care of by her father. According to People magazine, the girl has filed a lawsuit against the hospital, which is due to start in September this year. “I want justice for my mom,” Maya writes in the lawsuit.
