I am 29 years old, single and have been renting an apartment in Warsaw since graduation. Previously, I lived with my friends, but when they moved to their partners, I decided on a studio apartment. At this age, I don’t want to live like a student with people I don’t know and don’t feel comfortable with. Unfortunately, this translates into high costs. I pay almost PLN 3,000 a month for everything (rent plus bills).
“They sensed a good deal in a secure loan”
The situation in the country stopped me from taking a loan to buy a flat. I have friends whose installments have doubled in a short time. However, when I found out about the safe credit option, I decided to give it a try. I decided that I would be interested in real estate from the secondary market.
While I can’t have any complaints about the bank adviser, what the apartment owners are doing now is a nightmare. I have the impression that everyone sensed a good interest in a safe loan and became “Business Janusz”. For example, a month ago I saw a studio apartment on the outskirts of Warsaw for PLN 420,000. Although the apartment is in need of a general renovation, and the location leaves much to be desired, I decided that it was still the best option so far. When I was determined, the owner increased the price to 550,000. This type of situation happened to me two more times.
In Poland, an apartment is a luxury
Do I want my own apartment? Honestly, I don’t care that much. I don’t know if I will start a family or go abroad in the coming years. So I would prefer not to make such a radical decision as a loan for several dozen years. However, when I pay someone almost PLN 3,000 for rent every month, I am overcome with great frustration. I very much regret that we do not have the option of renting an apartment from the state, which exists in many much richer Western countries. I do not recommend anyone to experience such stress as I have been experiencing in the last month. Not everyone is mentally strong enough to feel good in such circumstances. I’ve had enough myself and I’m really considering quitting. It is a pity that in our country an apartment is a luxury.
