Thanks to “Kryminalny”, Marek Włodarczyk became a star. He almost lost his life on set

Although usually on film sets during the shooting of difficult scenes, actors are replaced by stuntmen, it is not always possible to realize all the creators’ ideas in this way. Marek Włodarczyk, who almost died on the set of “Crime,” became convinced of the dangers that await an actor during his work.

Marek Włodarczyk is a well-known actor from Łódź who has been passionate about cinema since childhood. He made his debut in the film Sowizdrzał Świętokrzyski in 1978, where he played with Beata Tyszkiewicz. He performed in theaters in Katowice, Łódź and Warsaw. He spent martial law in Germany, where he continued his acting career for years and even taught acting at local universities.

Marek Włodarczyk pointed out the differences between working on the set in Poland and Germany

The greatest publicity and huge popularity in Poland was brought to Włodarczyk by the series “Kryminalny” broadcast on TVN from 2004 to 2008. When it turned out that the actor’s compatriots loved Commissioner Adam Zawada, the artist decided to return to the country. In later years, he played Józef Cieplak in “Brzydula”, and recently played in the film “Pokusa”.

The series, which brought the actor the greatest publicity, also left behind traumatic memories. In one of the last interviews, Marek Włodarczyk revealed that there was a serious accident on the production set, in which he almost died.

In an interview with the Plejada portal, Włodarczyk pointed out that although stuntmen were employed for the series, there were still plenty of challenges for the actors on the set. As befits an action-packed production, the artists faced numerous challenges and sometimes shot really difficult scenes. Some turned out to be even dangerous.

“As a rule, we did everything ourselves. I remember that when I showed my colleagues from Germany how we record chase scenes, they grabbed their heads. They asked where we got such huge budgets for the implementation of such scenes” – said the actor in differences regarding the production of the series, that are easy to see with such extensive experience. “There, to shoot something like that, you need a city permit, the entire street has to be turned off, and only stuntmen can sit in cars. And we did everything in normal street conditions,” recalls the actor.

“To my surprise, I was unable to move”

Włodarczyk points out that during the four years of shooting for the series, the team managed to avoid serious accidents and injuries. However, the actor revealed that he faced a situation that could have ended tragically. Shooting for “Kriminalnych” in Malta was underway. Commissioner Zawada was supposed to receive a strong blow to the head and fall into the sea. The seemingly easy stage turned out to be a challenge when Włodarczyk started surfacing too early due to too low weight. The team decided to add weight to the actor.

“Operator Marek Traskowski, who took underwater photos, said that he would not be able to record me lying on the bottom. Someone came up with the idea of charging me with lead. When I was thrown into the water again, I lay on the bottom for a while and got up on my own. After that, I repeated it several times,” says the actor. Unfortunately, exhausting doubles took a toll on Włodarczyk.

“So the crew was used to the fact that I was doing great and didn’t need any help. After we finished rehearsals, I was given some more lead to make my drowning look more spectacular. The command was: ‘Camera, action!’, I fell into the sea and to my surprise I couldn’t move. I tried to get up as before, but I couldn’t. I didn’t know what was going on, “recalls the serial Zawada. Fortunately, someone from the crew pulled the actor out in time. “I almost drowned on the set of ‘Kryminalnych’. And in a place where the water was one meter deep” – concludes the artist.
