Four days later, his 2005 Toyota Corolla was found near an intersection in Bremerton, about half a mile from a body of water. Inside, police found personal items, except for a wallet and car keys. All the lights in the apartment were on.

Officers investigating the disappearance initially believed that Joe Pichler had committed suicide. This was hinted at in which he wished he was a “stronger brother” and in which he asked the younger brother to receive his things. Poetry and quotes that could suggest gloom or depression were also found. However, both family and friends emphasized that he was in a good mood before his disappearance. The sniffer dogs, however, did not find any trace of the scent near the body of water.

In 2023, 17 years have passed since the disappearance. To this day, it is not known what happened to Joe Pichler.
