Readers’ tribute to Almudena Grandes: they attend her funeral with copies of her books

Readers will say goodbye to the Madrid writer Almudena Grandes, She died on Saturday at the age of 61 due to cancer, accompanying her with her works that have marked her the most.

In the civil cemetery of Almudena, where one of the great Spanish letters will be buried, his followers have been summoned at the proposal of the journalist Ramon Lobo, in a tribute to the image and likeness of the Portuguese Nobel laureate José Saramago.

“I don’t know where the farewell will be, but Almudena Grandes deserves an act like Saramago’s in Lisbon, with her readers holding some of her books as thanks,” the writer shared via Twitter.

Readers have responded and at the agreed time, eleven in the morning, they have come to pay their respects to the writer. The answer, scheduled at noon, is expected to also attend the President of the Government, Pedro Sanchez, and the second vice president, Yolanda Diaz.

“Thanks for the love”

The widower of the writer, the also director of the Instituto Cervantes Luis Garcia Montero, has thanked the support shown by society in these difficult times. “I suppose that being sunk is a way to stay in love and to start a new life with the love of always,” he wrote via Twitter.

For its part, the socialist spokesperson in the Madrid City Council, Sea Espinar, has proposed renaming the El Retiro Park Car Ride to dedicate it to the memory of Grandes.

The mayor asks that it be “the City Council that represents all Madrilenians and all Madrilenians who organize an institutional act as a tribute to the writer.” The PSOE will ask for a minute of silence at the beginning of the Plenary session of this month of November and will propose in the same forum that she be named Favorite Daughter of what was her city, the same initiative to which the Mixed Group will lead.
