American rapper Milton Powell, better known as Big Pokey, has died at 45 years after vanishing in full concert last Saturday June 17. The one who was an icon of the Houston hip hop scene was performing at a bar on Saturday in a themed act on June Day when he fell backwards on stageaccording to local media.

“He was well loved by his family, friends and loyal fans,” his publicist said in a statement. “Big Pokey will be forever ‘The Hardest Pit In The Litter!'”, the statement added, referring to the rapper’s debut album. However, the cause of his death has not been confirmed.

Images of the tragic event have circulated on social networks and show how Powell suddenly fell backwards with the microphone in his hand while performing in the bar Pour09 de Beaumont. Paramedics arrived just before midnight local time, a Beaumont police spokeswoman told the Houston Chronicle.

Powell was a founding member of Screwed Up Clickk, an influential hip-hop collective of Houston artists and helped create the city’s “chopped-and-screwed” sound, a relaxed, low-key style which is produced by slowing down the pitch and tempo of the underlying track.
