Władysław Nehrebecki was born on June 14, 1923 in Borysław, Ukraine, commonly known as “Galician hell”. Due to the difficult financial situation of the family, at the age of 6, he and his older sister ended up in an orphanage run by nuns, where he spent a decade.
He dreamed of going to college. His financial situation forced him to take a different path
After the outbreak of World War II, Nehrebecki was sent to forced labor in the oil fields near Hannover, Germany. In 1945, he was sent to the repatriation point in Czechowice-Dziedzice, and although he had the opportunity to go to Canada, he decided to stay in the country. He wanted to find his relatives and start studying at the Academy of Fine Arts, but ultimately his dream was ruined due to the lack of sufficient funds. Despite the difficulties, he did not break down and persistently trained his craft, gaining new skills during numerous courses. It was then that he was noticed by the “Nowy Świat Przygód” magazine, which hired him as a graphic editor. Nehrebecki began to publish the first comics, i.e. “The Scourge of the South” or “Przesław znad Odry”. In the meantime, he also started working with the Animated Film Studio. He made his debut in 1949 with the animation “Traktor A1”, but success appeared only 3 years later with the fairy tale “Kimsobo the Traveler”. He gained international popularity with the 1958 film “The Cat and the Mouse”, which was shown in one of the New York museums.
The fairy tale “Bolek i Lolek” was his greatest hit. The last years of the director’s life were a series of misfortunes
Nehrebecki made a real sensation in the world in 1963. At that time, Telewizja Polska broadcast the first episode. The cartoon almost immediately became a hit, as it was watched by over a billion viewers around the world. The inspiration to create the main ones were the artist’s sons, Jan and Roman. — Dad was watching us and one day he decided to make a film about the adventures of two boys with opposite personalities — Roman Nehrebecki in “Wysokie Obcasy”. The production continued for 23 years, creating as many as 150 episodes and two full-length films that broke box office records. – The films were made for children, and as it turns out, adults are also very eager to watch them. This series satisfies children’s longing for adventures, travels, for a certain fantasy of the world – said the director in one of the interviews.
Although Władysław Nehrebecki was an excellent artist, work consumed most of his time. Despite this, he always tried to make the most of the moments spent with his loved ones. He had three sons from his marriage to Maria. The family traveled a lot, organized camping trips and trips to the seaside. However, the idyll was interrupted by the death of a woman. Later, the artist started a fight for copyrights to the character “Bolek i Lolek”. As if that wasn’t enough, in the meantime Nehrebecki was diagnosed with infectious jaundice and was isolated from his relatives for some time. However, fate smiled at him again, because a new love appeared in the artist’s life, Elżbieta, and the fruit of this relationship was a daughter, Marzena. Władysław Nehrebecki died on December 28, 1978 in Katowice. He was 55 at the time.
