“Warszawianka” is both a tragic and thoroughly comic story about Frank “Czuły” Czczuły – in this role. His hero just turns 40 and is a writer who no longer wants to write books, a sought-after playboy, an urban legend and an incorrigible party animal, and at the same time a loving father and sensitive friend, who, however, most often cannot be relied on at all, because his life is series of minor and major mishaps.
It is also an original story by Jakub Żulczyk, who worked on the project for several years. – Scripts, when taken seriously, take a long time to bake. The difference is that books are written and screenplays are rewritten. This is a constant rewrite – he assured us during the conversation, who appeared only once on the set of the series directed by Jacek Borcuch. “Writers who don’t write scripts have this idea that they’re going to come to the set and figure out what the movie is going to look like. It doesn’t work like that,’ he explained why he didn’t get in the way of the filmmakers.
Szyc about “Warszawianka”: I treated it as a settlement with a piece of life
I read the scripts in half a day. I lay there overwhelmed afterward, not knowing if I could even jump into the story. But then we made a decision together. Then I had to fill it with my body, which also underwent a certain transformation. And also with my emotions, which I had a problem with, because I didn’t know if I could manage to find myself in this world, from which I had already escaped privately. It was difficult for me to the point that I had all this therapeutic help, a support group, just to cope. And despite the fact that it’s all dry and apparently not in these situations, but my body was strongly experiencing what was happening to it on the set. So much so that I’ve had dreams after various scenes of ours that suddenly take you back light years. Such dry hangovers. It was dangerous, but it worked, because I also treated it as some kind of psychodrama and therapy for me, cleansing or settling accounts with a piece of my life – Borys Szyc told Gazeta.pl during an interview. The whole conversation in which Jakub ¯ulczyk, among others, explains why people are always pissed off about book adaptations, what his approach to screenwriting looks like, and what he thinks will come out of the American script strikes, you’ll see in this video:
It was hard not to take the opportunity and ask him about the legendary Jerzy Skolimowski’s partner on the set, who played the father of the main character – the famous painter. – He is not easy, but he is a very grateful and wonderful partner. She absolutely always has her own opinion, totally cares about how she looks. What is so surprising, Jerzy has – it’s hard to reveal – Jerzy always has a mirror with him and carefully checks how his hairstyle looks. He likes details in general, he is an aesthete, he is also a painter. So I think that this painterly part of him transfers to all other aspects of his life – he revealed the secret of the main actor.
– His paintings are in our series. These are his works. Also for him, I think, it was a challenge and to connect on a different emotional level with this series, because he also put his painterly work there. For me it was a dream meeting. We’ve known him for many years and I love him. He is a very charismatic and interesting character, surprising and full of opposites – described the Oscar-nominated director “IO”. We also asked if the filmmaker was faithful to the script’s dialogue: – I think he changed the text as he saw fit. But so that it fits in his mouth, which is great in the end, because you believed in this character 100 percent. He’s a terrible father, a monster. I think that this account explains a lot about Czuły – announced Szyc.
