The mayor of Opole wrote directly about this year’s festival. “Could be better”

The mayor of Opole, Arkadiusz Wi¶niewski, posted an entry in social media summarizing the 60th National Festival of Polish Song. He also referred to the boycott of the festival by many artists.

Every year, the festival in Opole attracts crowds of fans to both the Millennium Amphitheater and TV sets. However, for several years, more and more artists have resigned from performing on the Opole stage, to which the mayor of the city referred.

The Mayor of Opole thanks TVP for organizing the festival. “We witnessed a musical feast”

Arkadiusz Wiśniewski posted an extensive entry on his profile, in which he sums up this year

In difficult political times, the Festival defended itself with its artistic level, still high viewership and full audience at each of the concerts (even on a rainy Friday), although of course it could have been better. (…) I would like to thank TVP and other partners, as well as all those involved in its preparation. For three days, we witnessed a musical feast that attracted the eyes of the whole of Poland.

In the entry, the president emphasized that in politically difficult times, the Opole festival still defends itself and enjoys a large viewership. He noted, however, that an increasing number of artists are resigning from performances for political reasons. Arkadiusz Wiśniewski emphasized that the 60th anniversary of the festival could be an occasion to celebrate and invite many famous bands or bands, but the politics and situation related to TVP meant that many stars refused to participate. According to the president, after the autumn elections the situation may improve.

Can the Opole festival change the station? The president talked to Polsat and TVN, but they were not interested

Arkadiusz Wiśniewski admitted that he had discussed the organization of the festival with Polsat and TVN, but none of the commercial stations was interested. The festival is associated with considerable expenses and a great undertaking, and both stations already have their own music events, which they do not want to give up. He also emphasizes that Public Television provides the event with great cultural value, and in the case of commercial television, the emphasis is often on entertainment and advertising.

Public television can still afford to be missionary and have quite a large budget, higher than that of commercial television.

According to the president of Opole, the festival was created in the times of the People’s Republic of Poland, where it had no competition, and the most important music artists performed on stage. Nowadays, the situation has changed a lot, and musicians can choose from offers. However, he assures that the city, as one of the organizers, will still try to ensure a high artistic level of the festival.

I promise, however, that just like in 2017, when I did not let President Kurski into the Amphitheater, in the coming years I will guard the achievements of the Festival and look for opportunities to safely expand its formula.
