No matter how many times you watch it, there’s always some detail that you missed before. One such surprise, which continues to surprise generations of viewers, is the eighteenth episode of the fourth season – “The One with Rachel’s New Dress”.
Chandler’s real dad starred in “Friends”
In the episode, Jennifer Aniston’s Rachel is dating handsome Joshua, whom she met at work. She has a romantic dinner planned at her apartment, and she wants to spice up the atmosphere with a sensual petticoat. Unfortunately, during the meal, Chandler and Joey’s duck and chicken arrive at Rachel and Monica’s apartment. When it turns out that Joshua is afraid of birds, the couple take a picnic basket to Rachel’s boyfriend’s parents’ apartment. These were not supposed to be at home, so our heroine changes into a nightgown topped with lace.
Then Joshua’s parents show up in the apartment and things get awkward. Rachel is sitting in a suggestive pose on the couch, terrified. She improvises and explains that she works at the Bloomigndale fashion house, and part of her tasks is to test individual models from the European market. As a result of the conversation, John, her boyfriend’s father, says to his wife about Rachel: “I like her, she seems smart.”
Many viewers missed that the role of Joshua’s dad was played by John Bennett Perry – an American television and film actor, as well as a model known from early “Old Spice” commercials. Most importantly – privately, he is the father of Matthew Perry, who played Chandler in “Friends” for years. Although the father and son are very similar, they did not appear together in the scene, which is probably why the viewers missed their kinship – in his text by Konstantin Pyrnokoki from “Insider”.

In “Friends” in guest roles also appeared m.in. Danny DeVito, Sting, Isabella Rossellini, Brad Pitt (Jennifer Aniston’s husband at the time), Alec Baldwin, the aforementioned Bruce Willis and Julia Roberts, as well as Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Christina Applegate, Brooke Shields, Kathleen Turner (she played the transgender father Chandler), Hugh Laurie, Helen Hunt, George Clooney, Jean Claude Van Damme, Charlie Sheen, Anna Faris, Winona Ryder, Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and Susan Sarandon.
