Women turned into spoils of war as sex slaves, forced marriages, girls mutilated when they went to collect water… wars pour out their cruelty against the entire population but, especially, with women who continue to suffer the consequences even when conflicts come to an end.
This is what the photojournalist Gervasio Sánchez, who has dedicated more than 35 years of his life to conflicts and humanitarian crises, has wanted to capture in his book ‘Violences, women, wars’. Through 90 stories in 90 snapshots, portrays specific violence against women in wars.
“What I try by all means is to tell your story with the greatest possible dignity, because I know what they have suffered, “she explains to laSexta. An example is the case of Eusebia Roche, a girl who was already a prostitute at the age of 12 and had to run away from home because her father and brothers systematically raped her.
Another case is that of mothers who watch their children die in his arms of anger or tuberculosis, girls who have suffered mutilations by landmines or minors who have been forced to marry men much older than them because their parents had arranged it that way.
This work, which has seen the light with the support of the Aragonese Institute for Women, takes a tour of 20 war conflicts in which women they have gone through the greatest difficulties for reasons of gender.
