Beauty and physical perfection are in many cases an obsession that leads people to aesthetic surgeries and invasive treatments. Lygia Fazio, a Brazilian influencer, decided to undergo buttock augmentation three years ago and unfortunately ended her life due to health complications caused by the implanted material.

It was a mixture of silicone with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) resin, a plastic component that infiltrated other parts of his body and led to serious infections, according to Semana.

As Grupo Gamma points out, this material was initially used for medical purposes such as the production of bones and dental prostheses, but in the 1980s it began to become popular as a beauty treatment.

However, its use as an aesthetic filler carries significant risks and side effects, since due to its composition it is not degradable and is easily absorbed by cells, so that plastic particles can migrate to other parts of the body.

This was revealed by a study by a member of the National Medical Academy of Brazil, Claudio Cardoso de Castro, who showed that PMMA also promotes the formation of nodules, reports Vida Wellness and Beauty.

Experts point out that polymethyl methacrylate resin is a material that is difficult to extract from the body for several reasons, firstly because the material is often transferred, even to organs, as happened to Lygia Fazio.

In the long term, it also hardens the area where it was applied, necessitating mutilation of the area on some occasions.

The case of Lygia Fazio is a clear example of how the use of PMMA as an aesthetic filler can be dangerous, as she suffered multiple complications that left her hospitalized for over 100 days and eventually lost her life.

According to Roberto Chacuro, there are only three manufacturing companies in Brazil that produce this material which, according to the portal, gives satisfactory results as long as it is used by professionals.
