Krystyna Łubieńska was an outstanding television and film actress. She gained the greatest popularity by playing in the performances of the Gdańsk Wybrzeże Theatre, and TV viewers could remember her colorful character from the TV series “Sądziedzi”. Two days before her death, the artist ended up in a nursing home.

Krystyna Łubieńska died on May 10, 2023. Information about the 90-year-old death was made public by the director of the Wybrzeże Theater in Gdańsk, with which the star was associated for over 55 years. Krystyna Łubieńska, who had been associated with our theater for several decades, died in Sopot today, in an interview with PAP. Two days before her death, the star went to a nursing home.

Krystyna Łubieńska was born on August 3, 1932 in Warsaw. Her father, a cavalryman of the 1st Regiment of Krechowiec Lancers, was murdered in 1940 in Katyn. As an 11-year-old, she took part in the Warsaw Uprising, was a nurse and liaison officer of the Home Army. She made her debut as a child, in the ballet “The Puppet Prophet”, staged at the Warsaw Opera. She considered her first serious role to be the play Wodewil Warszawski directed by Wacław Zdanowicz. She was 19 at the time. Later, she studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, but finally, at the insistence of her mother, she abandoned this field of study in favor of a theater school. She captivated the examiners not only with her talent, but also with her sincerity. Apparently, during the interrogations, Aleksander Bardini asked why he wanted to stay. Then she replied without thinking: “because my mother told me so.” She got the index, of course.

After graduation, Łubieńska performed in one of Wrocław’s theaters for some time, but thanks to the help of Zygmunt Hübner, she got a job at the Wybrzeże Theater in Gdańsk. She has been associated with this institution for 55 years. She made her first public appearance on October 1, 1958 in the role of Helena in the play “There will be no Trojan War”. Throughout her career, she has created over 200 excellent roles both on the stage and on the screen. She collaborated with many outstanding artists, including Bohdan Korzeniewski, the aforementioned Zygmunt Hübner and Adam Orzechowski. In turn, TV viewers may associate her with such series as “Lokatorzy” or “Neighbors”.

Krystyna Łubieńska loved not only theater but also poetry. She even organized meetings during which the most beautiful poems by Polish and foreign artists were read. “Sometimes the lines between the stage and the real world blurred. (…) she had a pearly laugh, she loved animals, and she did everything 100 percent. Although she herself said that she was “as old as St. Mary’s Tower”, she did not allow herself to be dusted, she was beyond time – about her during the funeral.
