The Musical Fortnight of San Sebastián faces its 84th edition, which presents 78 performances between August 3 and September 1 at the Kursaal, the Victoria Eugenia theater, Tabakalera, the San Telmo Museum and Chillida Leku, among others, as well as other locations in Gipuzkoa , Navarra, Álava and Lapurdi.

Among the highlights of the programme, already brought forward last April, stands out the monumental Eighth Symphony by Mahler, called “De los mil”, which will bring together more than 400 musicians including the Euskadiko Orkestra, the Navarra Symphony Orchestra, the Orfeón San Sebastian, the Orfeón Pamplonés, Easo Eskolania and Gazte Abesbatza.

The voices, in this case by the Orfeón Donostiarra, constitute one of the fundamental ingredients of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony that will be performed by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Joseph Haydn’s “Missa Nelson” that will sound with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen and Andra Mari Abesbatza.

In the own productions section, this year the oratorio “Oedipus Rex” will be presented, the work written by Sophocles and adapted by Jean Cocteau, with music by Igor Stravinsky, which will be performed semi-staged by Bilbao Orkestra Sinfonikoa and Easo Abesbatza.

The promotion of local artists is another of the pillars of the San Sebastian cycle, among which is the mezzo-soprano Carmen Artaza, who will be in the cast of soloists of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony, the Gipuzkoan pianist Judith Jauregi and the soprano Miren Urbieta, one of the soloists in Mahler’s Octave.

The cellist Pablo Ferrández, the return of the violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, who will be with her chamber ensemble, and the pianists Mitsuko Uchida and Grigory Sokolov will be some of the outstanding soloists who will pass through the Gipuzkoan capital.

Dance will have its space with the Angelin Preljocaj company that will do a “personal” version of the classic “Swan Lake” by Tchaikovsky.

The Victoria Eugenia theater will be the scene of a single performance, that of the Euskal Barrokensemble, entitled “El amor brujo: esencias de la música de Manuel de Falla”.

Other cycles such as the one dedicated to ancient, chamber, contemporary music and Young Performers, in addition to the Andante Fortnight, the Opening Day, the Children’s Fortnight and Tabakalera Dantzan complete the musical cycle offer for its next edition.
