The Ecuadorian Photographer Kevin Moncayo triumphed at the recent Sony World Photography Awards with his photo ‘Sunrise in Sangay’, which was in second place, with a Latin American National Award.

The first place was taken by the Mexican Pável Vélez.

The program National awards is an initiative of the World Photography Organization and Sony supporting local photo communities around the world, with 55 participating countries and the individual images registered in some of the ten competition categories.

Kevin has over 20 years of experience in the world of photography. His beginnings were photographing surfers on the beach and in the mountains of the Ecuadorian Andes.

He enjoys traveling around the country taking pictures of active and dormant volcanoes. Of his recognition, Moncayo said: “I am very grateful for this award. Having my photography voted the best in Latin America is a dream come true, inspiring me to keep going.”

The duo consisting of Marisol Méndez, from Bolivia, and Federico Kaplan, from Argentina, won first place in the environmental category within the professional competition with his Miruku series.

For his part, Dinorah Graue Obscura, from Mexico, was honored with the photographer of the year award in the 2023 open competition, that celebrates the power of individual images.

While the title is on 2023 Sony World Photography Awards Photographer of the Year corresponds to the acclaimed Portuguese photographer Edgar Martins for his Our War series, a tribute to Martins friend, photojournalist Anton Hammerl, who was killed during the 2011 Libyan civil war.
