Probably no HBO series, apart from “Game of Thrones”, can match the popularity of “The Last of Us”. The series is one of the station’s biggest successes this year and there is no indication that this will change. Another HBO series, “The Idol”, which was initially indicated as the next hit of the station, after a preview screening at the Cannes Film Festival, received very poor notes and reviewers indicate that it could be a big flop.
The Last of Us Will End With Season Two?
The success of the series is largely due to the computer game of the same title from 2013, on the basis of which the production script was created. The series faithfully recreated the first game and introduced several changes that did not prevent the beloved atmosphere of the original. The second part of the 2020 game “The Last of Us”, however, is much more extensive and it has been suggested that its adaptation should be divided into two different seasons.
The show’s record-breaking ratings led the producers to announce the creation of a second season before the first was aired to its end. Its production was about to begin, but was interrupted by a writers’ strike in the United States. Despite the great success of the series, Francesca Orsi, one of the directors of HBO series, said that the third season of “The Last of Us” is not certain.
In an interview with, she indicated that showrunner Craig Mazin and series creator Neil Druckmann are still figuring out where to end the series and that they have an idea of what the third season might look like, but for now they are focusing on the current work:
I think Craig and Neil are still figuring out how they’re going to take the show to the end. They already have an initial idea for a third season of the show, but at this point, we’re taking things one by one and focusing on the second series. For now, we can’t confirm that there will be a third series, but I know that they both have an idea for it. However, this is not reason enough to create another season.
It seems that if the second season is watched on a similar level as the first, it is quite possible that the station will want to produce a third series. It is worth mentioning that the second part of the game divided its fans and some of them decided not to even complete it. It is possible that the same may happen with the series, but the writers will certainly want to avoid it.
