“Interrogation” couldn’t get to the cinemas because of the subject matter

“Interrogation” is a film directed and written by Ryszard Bugajski, in which Krystyna Janda played the singer Antonina Dziwisz, who is arrested by the officers of the Security Office. A woman is sent to prison only to be forced to testify against her friend. During the interrogation, she is tortured by Major “Kąpielowy” (played by Janusz Gajos). For political reasons (the ongoing martial law), “Interrogation” was not allowed to be distributed. The film survived only because Bugajski was allowed to make a master copy of the film. As a result, the film found its way into the illegal circulation, which cost the director his job. After that, Bugajski emigrated to Canada.

Interrogation was not released in theaters until December 13, 1989. At the Polish Film Festival, he received the Audience Award and the Journalists’ Award, and a year later the Special Jury Award, awards for the leading male role (Janusz Gajos), leading female role (Krystyna Janda) and supporting female role (Anna Romantowska).
