Antonio Gala dies at the age of 92

Playwright, novelist, poet and essayist Antony Gala passed away this Sunday at 92 years, as confirmed by his family in a statement. The funeral chapel will be installed in the assembly hall of the Antonio Gala Foundation.
A precocious writer, at the age of 5 he wrote a short story and at 7 his first play. In 2011, the author of ‘Crimson Scroll‘ either ‘The Turkish Passion‘, he publicly explained that he suffered “a cancer that is difficult to remove“, and that he was undergoing a chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment.
In 1951, at the age of 15, he entered the University of Seville to study Law, and enrolled in Madrid for two other courses: Philosophy and Letters and Political and Economic Sciences. During his college years he published his pfirst poems in the magazines of the time. In addition, he soon founded two magazines, with Gloria Fuertes and Julio Mariscal Montes.
For a time he taught Philosophy and Art History in different schools, and in 1962 he went to Italy, where he stayed for almost a year. By now, Gala had written the book of poems ‘Intimate Enemy‘ (1959) for which he received a second prize in the Adonais Poetry Prize.
Back in Spain in the spring of 1963, he began a long and fruitful career as a playwright, during which he wrote plays such as ‘rings for a lady‘ (1973) or ‘Petra Regalada‘ (1980).
As a columnist, he has worked in different newspapers, and several of his series of articles have subsequently been published as books. In addition to being a columnist, he has participated in conferences on literary topics, especially theater.
In his poetic work there are books published at an early age, and others much closer in time: ‘Cordovan poems‘(1994),’The double-headed eagle: love texts‘(1994),’Love Poems‘ (1997) and ‘The soulless Tobias poem‘ (2005).
In addition to the Adonais, Planeta and Calderón de la Barca Awards, he has received, among others, the following awards: City of Barcelona Award 1965; Theater Forum Award 1971; National Literature Award, Spectator Award and Critics Award of 1972; Golden Quixote Award 1972-73; Antena de Oro Award and Mayte Award of 1973; National Script Award 1973 and Audiovisual Media Award 1976.
He was fighting the disease, without leaving his home, until June 2014, when very dejected, he was seen on the poetry awards ceremony that bear his name. In November 2015, she gave an emotional recorded speech that sounded like a farewell, during the 2015 Granada Tourism Awards ceremony.
One of his last public appearances was in April 2018, when he attended the delivery of the Loewe Poetry Awardsawarded to a former fellow of your foundation and great friend, Ben Clark.
In 2021 the house-museum of Antonio Gala in the Malaga town of AlhaurÃn el Grande, where the writer lived, as a multidisciplinary cultural center with an international vocation.
