They met in 1955 and although they had very different personalities, they were married for 54 years. He ruled the state, she ruled the house. When Wojciech Jaruzelski invited her on the first date, she categorically refused.

Barbara and Wojciech Jaruzelski met in 1955 during a Chopin concert. That same evening, he invited her to dinner. – I eat dinner with breakfast with my mother and grandmother – he heard in reply. – Then I had science in my head, not love affairs – recalled Barbara Jaruzelska in an interview. She had no desire to date or romance. – It was the 1950s. Everything looked different. Dating, kissing, that wasn’t my style. I was unusual in these matters and that is why I became interested in him – years later. A few days later, however, they went to a meeting at the theater. For Barbara, the undoubted advantage was that Jaruzelski did not smoke, did not drink and was gallant.

She was 25 then. She graduated from ballet school, danced in the Central Song and Dance Ensemble of the Polish Army. She also studied German studies. He was 32 years old, he was a colonel and from the first meeting he fell in love with Barbara. They went on dates to theaters, the opera, concerts at the philharmonic. He invited her to dinners, during which Barbara apparently spared no expense, ordering the most expensive dish from the card. Wojciech Jaruzelski did not know that when he met Barbara, she was divorcing her first husband. It soon turned out that Jaruzelski also began to show interest in her teammate Irena Mrówczyńska. This one, in turn, secretly with a well-known opera singer. Finally, Barbara gave an ultimatum and told Wojciech to choose. It was her who finally asked for her hand.

On December 1, 1960, Barbara and Wojciech get married. Soon after, Jaruzelski becomes a member of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party and begins his political career. Five years after the wedding, Monika, the couple’s only daughter, is born. At the sight of a newborn Barbara: “It’s so dead.” Jaruzelski focused on a career in the party, which would culminate in the position of the Minister of National Defense, and later, in 1989, his election as the head of state. Barbara, on the other hand, focused on her scientific career. She defended her doctorate and worked for years at the Institute of Applied Linguistics at the University of Warsaw. As Monika Jaruzelska recalled years later, her parents’ marriage was basically compatible and predictable, although they differed significantly in character. At home, Barbara played the first fiddle.
