Mieczys³aw Stoor played Hans Stedtke, a Gestapo man in “Stake larger than life”, and Sergeant Sitarz in “Black Clouds”. The audience adored him, and even episodic roles were remembered. His death still raises doubts. For many fans, this is one of the greatest secrets of Polish cinema.

Mieczysław Stoor was born on September 5, 1929 in Bojanów, a town near Rawicz. During the war, he worked in a locksmith’s workshop, but he dreamed of continuing his education. After the war, he managed to pass his final exams, and in 1949 he joined the “film school” in Łódź. He took the first steps in his acting career on the stage of the theatre. He made his debut in 1950, while still a student, at the Teatr im. Wojciech Bogusławski in Kalisz. In 1954, after graduating, he moved to Warsaw and developed his career in the capital.

At the end of the 1950s, Mieczysław Stoor became an actor in Kon, where he replaced Mieczysław Czechowicz. Charismatic from the theater stage, he quickly found his way to cinema and TV screens. His first film role was in “Five from Barska Street” directed by Aleksander Ford.

He performed in the Television Theater, but also in cult productions such as “Stakes greater than life”, “How I unleashed the second world war”, in which he played a minor role, or the series “Czterej tankmen i pies”, in which he played the sergeant Kalita. His last role was the sergeant Sitarz in the TV series “Black Clouds”. His career was dominated by supporting and episodic roles, yet he was remembered by fans. Mieczysław Stoor’s career was interrupted by a tragic accident.

In the autumn of 1973, Mieczysław Stoor stayed in Kraśnik Lubelski on the set of the film “Gniazdo” directed by Jan Rybkowski. He died in his sleep on October 5, the official cause was carbon monoxide poisoning, but it is not known today exactly where he was. Although it has been almost 50 years since the death of the 44-year-old Stoor, the case still raises many doubts. There are still different theories.

According to one of them, the actor suffocated from the exhaust fumes from the car engine that was not turned off, some say that he fell asleep with a glowing cigarette, which set the quilt on fire. The actor was buried at the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw. Interestingly, the wrong dates of birth and death were engraved on the tombstone – October 5 instead of September 5 and November 5 instead of October 5.
