Juan Carlos Formellthe bassist of the historic Cuban group Los Van Van, died Friday night at the age of 59 of a heart attack after leaving the stage in the middle of a concert in New York.
The death of the musician, son of the founder of Los Van Van, Juan Formello, This was confirmed in the press release of the Cuban Institute of Music.
The artist was not feeling well on stage during the group’s performance at the Lehman Center in the Bronxwhich caused the gig to be cut short, although it resumed half an hour later with another bass player in his place.

Born in Havana in 1964, the musician studied at the Alejandro García Caturla and Amadeo Roldán conservatories in Havana and completed his training at the National School of the Arts of Cuba, before settling in New York in 1993.
According to the Cuban Institute of Music, He stood out with his distinctive style as an instrumentalist accompanying various figures of Cuban jazz such as Emiliano Salvador, Guillermo Fragoso and Joseíto González, director of the Rumbavana orchestra.
A guitarist, bassist and composer, Formell recorded the Grammy-nominated “Songs from a Little Blue House” in 1999, the first of several solo albums.
After his father’s death in 2014he took his baton and joined Los Van Van as bass player.
The Cuban group performed in New York this Friday as part of a troubled US tour, as the band was first forced to postpone that concert due to visa issues and cancel another show in Miami.
