The Basque Government has approved today, in the Governing Council, the agreement to reform and expand the Principal Theater of Vitoria-Gasteiz. The expected cost is 12 million euros, 40% of which (4,800,000 euros) will be financed by the Basque Government and 30% (3,600,000 euros) respectively by the Provincial Council and the City Council. It will be the latter, the Vitoria-Gasteiz City Council, which will be in charge of bidding for the project, as well as the direction and execution of the works.

The Basque Government considers that the project expands and improves the cultural offer in Vitoria. “Having a modern space, with greater stage capacity and accessible will help to revitalize culture in the heart of the city, a positive aspect for artists, the Basque culture industry and Basque society in general”, they stated after the Council of Government.

The reform will aim to improve accessibility, safety and comfort, respecting the current appearance of the space. The interior of the theater will be demolished and it will be rebuilt with a capacity of 842 seats (19 for people with reduced mobility).

According to the project of the works, a multipurpose room will be adapted to expand the scenic offer with small-format performances.
