In Polish cuisine, salt and pepper are the most popular, which does not mean that we do not use others: cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, cloves, anise, cardamom, vanilla, cumin, etc. They add flavor to the dish, but also have health-promoting properties. In the past, when they were not yet known and confirmed, it was associated with the magical powers of spices: they protected against diseases, provided vitality, success, etc. Some of these beliefs have persisted to this day.

Turmeric, the gift of the sun god

Turmeric is associated primarily with Indian cuisine. And rightly so – she was and is very popular in it. Once there, it was considered a sacred spice – it was used in various ceremonies. To this day, Hindus believe that it provides vitality, affects fertility and a successful sex life. That is why it often appears at weddings and weddings, on other occasions Indians rub their bodies with it.

Be careful with the salt

Not only for health reasons. Salt, according to old beliefs, is to be a support for those who start a new stage of life. That is why the newlyweds are traditionally greeted in the wedding hall with bread and salt, sometimes parents do it at home before the blessing. Salt, however, should not be greeted by a pregnant woman, because some believe that in this way you can contribute to miscarriage. A designer salt shaker filled with effective coarse salt will not be a suitable gift “for a new home”, if we are not sure that its owner is not expecting a child. On the other hand, in the past, salt was used to cleanse the aura in the house, which was supposed to prevent fights, but its accidental spilling meant a quarrel.

Black pepper has great power

People assumed that if something was good for them, it must be bad for malicious spirits and creatures. Although many centuries ago there was no scientific evidence for this, today it is well known that black pepper essential oil has a calming and relaxing effect on a person, helps to relieve tension, and also increases self-confidence and concentration. So it seems our ancestors had a good hunch.

Cinnamon is supposed to attract money

In the past, cinnamon was one of the most expensive spices that went into the kitchen. So it was added to dishes in the homes of rich people, thanks to which it became a symbol of prosperity. Today, the price of cinnamon powder or its bark is no longer dizzying, but the belief that it has the power to attract money remains. Especially its smoke – formerly burnt with coal served people to fumigate rooms.
