“Wet cell” or “love room” in Polish prisons. It looks like one, but what are we going to find there?

Colloquially called by inmates a “wet room”, “wet cell” or “love room”, it is simply a room intended, among other things, for intimate visits with a partner. Among other things – because, although it is mainly associated with the possibility of intimate contact with your other half, it is also used to spend time together alone.

A couple can, for example, eat a meal together in such a room. During the visit, it is allowed to consume food and drinks purchased by visitors on the premises of the prison. Food and beverages that have not been consumed during the visit are handed over to the visitor – we read in Article 105a of the Executive Penal Code, specifying the rules for the use of visits.

The equipment of such a room is described in detail in the regulation of the Minister of Justice of 19 December 2016 “on the living conditions of persons incarcerated in prisons and detention centers”. The document calls it “a separate room for unattended visits”.

“Wet cell” or “love room”. Although it is associated with one thing, it has more uses

Personal visits, without the participation of a guard or cameras, are granted only in certain circumstances. A prisoner or female prisoner must meet certain conditions. Meeting alone is a kind of reward, which is awarded by the director of the facility – ex officio or at the request of the inmate.

Rewards may be awarded to convicts who demonstrate good behavior while serving their sentence. A reward may also be given to a convict to encourage him to improve his behaviour

– is in turn Article 137 of the Executive Penal Code.

The visit lasts a maximum of one hour. During the day, the sentenced person may hold one such meeting, and during the whole month – two. The situation is slightly different in semi-open plants. There, for good behavior, a prisoner can take advantage of three such meetings within a month. If the director of the facility agrees, they can be combined into one.

A room for personal visits is arranged in most Polish prisons, but not in all.

Room for intimate visits. What’s in it?

What exactly do these rooms look like? This is described in detail in the above-mentioned regulation of the Minister of Justice. One of the most important features of the room is the fact that there are no cameras in it.

So what’s in an unattended visitation room? First of all, a bed, a table and an office chair, as well as one “soft armchair”. In addition, these are also:

  • Radio stand
  • Radio receiver
  • Clothes hanger
  • Mirror
  • Plastic bucket or trash can
  • Toiletries shelf
  • Towel rack
  • Plastic bowl
  • Platform-grid or anti-slip mat – if the room is also equipped with a shower and there are no anti-slip tiles
  • Brush, broom and dustpan
  • Toilet brush
  • Electric Kettle
  • Mug or glass
