Some time ago, the state of Florida and Disney entered a whole new level of conflict. All for one of the lessons Jenna Barbee taught with the fifth graders. The teacher – as part of classes about the Earth – decided to show her students the Disney animation entitled “Strange world”. However, she did not expect the consequences she now has to face.
Jail for showing children Disney animations?
After a lesson with the fifth graders, a teacher from an elementary school in Hernando County, one of the members of the parent board reported her to the state department of education. An investigation into the matter has begun. The woman is even threatened with imprisonment. – The cause of the commotion? “Strange World” is a Disney animation in which the character of a young gay man appears.
Meanwhile, in Florida there is a law that is commonly called “Don’t Say Gay” by residents. Although it is very imprecise and contains a lot of understatements, it has been accepted that according to it, teachers cannot educate their students about sexual identity and gender.
Disney Expresses Objections to ‘Don’t Say Gay’ Law
Relations between the company and the state authorities have been extremely tense for a long time. In Florida, there is a large amusement park and one of Disney’s headquarters, but the aforementioned “Don’t Say Gay” law raises many objections on the part of the concern and leads to to deepen the conflict. The dispute over the “Strange World” animation is another aspect that strengthens the mutual dislike of both sides – even though Florida benefits from taxes from Disney and the company from tax breaks.
