“Close your eyes” receives a warm ovation at the Cannes Film Festival

A warm and prolonged ovation closed this Monday the first screening at the Cannes Film Festival of “Cerrar los ojos”, by Víctor Erice, a film full of cinematographic and literary references that is the director’s fourth feature film, 31 years after “El sol of the quince”.

The screening was held with the absence of Erice, something that the general delegate of the festival, Thierry Frémaux, highlighted in his presentation.

Frémaux introduced the film’s actors who were in the room: Manolo Solo, José Coronado, María León, Helena Miquel and Ana Torrent, who received the biggest applause upon entering the Debussy room where the screening was held.

The film tells the story of the disappearance of an actor (Coronado) during a shoot and whose body is never found. After 22 years, a television program evokes the figure of the actor and broadcasts the last scenes in which he participated, shot by a close friend of his.

A film about identity and memory with many references that show Erice’s tastes, from Juan Marsé to Borges and even self-references to his own films, the most evident being the presence of Ana Torrent in the story and with a character named Ana. , again.

Torrent accompanied Erice when she was just a girl in her first adventure as a director, “The Spirit of the Beehive” (1973), a film that won the Concha de San Sebastián and immediately became a cult title.
