“When it comes to First Holy Communion, the world has really flown away in some places and it has less and less to do with the Lord Jesus,” the priest began his recording. Then he showed videos from TikTok showing professional make-up that is done to girls on this occasion, limousines and carriages in which children drive to church and parties for several hundred people with the first dance. Fr. Rafał Główczyński asked his students what they associate with First Holy Communion. Among the answers there was the acceptance of Jesus into the heart, but also joy, stress and gifts.

“These answers aren’t as religious as I personally would like”

Pupils, when asked what gifts are given for First Communion, listed: bicycles, computers, a chain with Mary, money, telephones, tablets, quads, scooters. What gifts would the children like to receive?

coins; I already got one gift – I went to Israel; new phone; new rollers; soccer jerseys; console; nice game, new bike

– we hear in the recording. “These answers are not as religious as I personally would like,” the priest said. Only one girl said that the gift is not the most important thing. The rest of the people mentioned things that are not the cheapest.

The priest has an appeal to the parents

In the next part of the video, parents spoke. They unanimously admitted that they were happy that children were currently receiving the sacrament in albs, because thanks to this “there is no fashion show”. In addition, the priest asked what gifts should not be given to the youngest. “I think that giving someone a very expensive gift can be just awkward. Later, parents may feel obligated that they also have to buy something like this, and not everyone can afford it,” said one mum.

Fr. Rafał Główczyński, inspired by the answers, appealed to his parents. “Let’s give the First Communion to Jesus and the children and let’s do everything to make it a beautiful spiritual experience, and let everything else be an accompanying element, not a dominant one. It can really work! Only adults, it depends on you the most” – he stressed .
