They needed a loan to implement the idea, and they could get it with a surety. For help, they turned to a colleague, Grzegorz G., who agreed to take part in it without hesitation. Despite completing the necessary formalities, the bank rejected their application without granting the subsidy. At the time, they were sure that nothing worse would happen to them, but soon it turned out how wrong they were.
Grzegorz began to demand repayment of a fictitious debt. Together with his bodyguard Mariusz, they harassed colleagues, blackmailed and encouraged them to commit numerous crimes, including theft and issuing bad checks. They threatened to abduct Bryliński’s 7-year-old nephew and force Sikora’s fiancée into prostitution. – Grzesiek showed me a picture of my fiancée, taken secretly. (…) He said that if I did not cooperate with him, he would take her to a brothel (…) — . The entrepreneurs reported the case to the police, hoping to get help, but they were turned away empty-handed. Terrified by the threats, they felt they had to act on their own.
When the tables were reversed, tragedy struck. They weren’t planning to kill anyone
In March 1994, Grzegorz G. and his bodyguard, invited by Bryliński, came to the apartment of one of them. Businessmen, Sławomir’s brother Tomek and colleague Marcin, overpowered the criminals. Bound and gagged, they were packed into a car and then taken to the suburbs of Warsaw. The plan was to scare them. They didn’t want to kill them. The situation got out of control. Grzegorz G. was not terrified of the situation, on the contrary. Although the men beat him severely, he continued to threaten them. At some point, Bryliński could not stand it and “stabbed him with a knife”. Arthur killed them. I was involved in it, so I’m guilty too. It was Artur who cut off their heads, because I’m not mentally prepared for that, recalled Sikora. To cover their tracks, they staged a Mafia feud. They threw the bodies into the Vistula, hoping that they would be swept away by the current, but after a few days they were found on the shore.
The police quickly identified the perpetrators. Bryliński, 32, and Sikora, 33, did not resist arrest and confessed to the murder. The trial lasted 14 months. In 1997, the sentence was passed – 25 years imprisonment for each. The failure of state institutions and the shocking story of young men inspired Krzysztof Krauze to create the film. “Dług” initiated the fight for pardon of the perpetrators, which ultimately ended in success. S³awomir Sikora left prison in 2005, and Artur Bryliński five years later.
