¦the death of 28-year-old Martinique £. shook Wroc³aw. On July 30, 1990, she was found dead in an apartment she shared with her partner. She was eight months pregnant.

Martynika Ł. worked as a journalist in the Wrocław branch of Telewizja Polska. She was considered a cheerful and passionate girl. At work, she met her great love – sound engineer Jan Sz. and although both were married at the time, it did not prevent a fiery romance.

The romance started at work. No one thought it would end tragically

They did not hide their feelings at work and almost everyone knew about their relationship. Martinique fell in love without memory. She assured me that she was ready to divorce and marry Jan. The man also argued that he intended to leave his wife. Martinique became pregnant while Jan was in the process of divorcing. They planned a common future and rented an apartment on Macedonian Street in Wrocław. The girl in was supposed to write that she can’t wait to live together.

She was sure that Jan was the one and felt that the feeling was mutual. On July 28, Martinique went to a friend’s for the weekend. Jan was the last person to see the girl alive, because she brought him a lunch before leaving for work. No one suspected that anything bad could happen, but when Martinique did not return from the trip, Jan informed her parents. He argued that he became worried because the girl did not speak to him. Together with his parents, he went to a flat on Macedonian Street. When no one answered, he broke the lock. When everyone got inside, they were shocked.

The first concern was caused by a looted purse lying in the corridor. Jan began to search the apartment. He found the body of his beloved in . She had been beaten up, and a baby quilt lay over her face. Seeing her dead daughter, the mother was to tell Jan that he had killed her. Parents from the beginning were convinced that Martinique’s death was caused by her lover. John became the prime suspect. After an autopsy, it turned out that Martinique had been dead for several days. The perpetrator beat her, then strangled her and carried her unconscious to a bathtub filled with water and drowned her. John Sz. changed his testimony many times. He stated that on the day of Martinique’s departure he was at the door of the apartment and found a note with a contact request left by her friend. The investigators had many questions. Why didn’t the man go inside if he was supposed to? And why did he go there, knowing the girl wouldn’t be home?

In the course of the investigation, it turned out that he had lied to Martinique about the divorce, and his wife had no idea about the affair. The police suspected that the girl could find out about her lover’s lies, which could lead to a fight. Jan was found guilty of the death of Martinique Ł, and on March 13, 1992, the court sentenced him to 25 years in prison. The motive for the crime was the fear of revealing the affair to his wife. He was released after 11 years, when in 2001 President Aleksander Kwasniewski pardoned him.
