The Cannes film festival will begin today in the French riverside city, and will close on the 27th. The film “Jeanne du Barry” will open the contest, directed by Maiwenn and starring herself alongside Johnny Depp, although it will do so outside of contest.
Out of competition, “Cerrar los ojos”, the long-awaited new feature film by Victor Erice, which will be screened on Monday, and “Robot dreams”, an animated film by Pablo Berger from Bilbao that will be seen in Cannes on Saturday, will also be screened out of competition.
In addition, Irati Gorostidi will participate in the Cannes Critics’ Week, an exhibition parallel to the festival, with the short film “Accountants”, thus repeating the experience that Estibaliz Urresola starred in last year with his short film “Cuerdas”.
For its part, the Sitges festival has selected the project ‘La ermita’, directed by Carlota Pereda and produced by Bixagu Entertainment, to participate in the Fantastic 7 section. It should be noted that the market has selected the Bilbao filmmaker Álex de la Iglesia as godfather of this edition.
Zinebi will also present four documentary feature film projects at Cannes Docs, and among the selected works we find ‘Itoiz_Udako Sesioak’, directed by Larraitz Zuazo and produced by the company Doxa Producciones.
Basque animation will present its projects ‘Conej Steps Out’, by Pablo Río, and ‘Corpúsculos’, by Laura Ibañez López
Furthermore, in the “Revelations. New Spanish Animation Short Films” section, one of the upcoming productions by the Bilbao company Uniko, ‘To bird or not to bird’, by Martín Romero, will participate.
