A Moscow court arrested Karolina Gruszka’s husband in absentia. Vyrypaev: I don’t think Poland will extradite me

The director and playwright Ivan Vyrypaev has been living in Poland for years, has Polish citizenship, opposes the war in Ukraine and actively supports the Ukrainian community. Karolina Gruszka’s husband is not a bit surprised that a court in Moscow decided to arrest him in absentia and put him on the federal list of international wanted persons. In an interview with RMF FM, he emphasizes: – I think that Poland will not extradite me.

Ivan Vyrypaev is also an actor, and in 2012 he was awarded the “Polityka” Passport in the “theatre” category. in numerous public statements, he opposes the war in Ukraine. In March 2022, he appealed to all theaters in the world that stage his plays to donate his royalties to help Ukraine in peace. The director and playwright has been living in Poland for over a dozen years, he has been married to an actress since 2007 and has dual citizenship. He is trying to give up his Russian passport, but reports about court decisions in Moscow complicate the whole matter – RMF FM.

The Russian authorities accuse Vyrypaev of discrediting Putin’s troops and, motivated by hatred or national hostility, of providing false information about the Russian army, which is punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The playwright is not particularly surprised by this decision, because he often speaks negatively about Vladimir Putin in the media, and he actively cooperates with Ukrainians and helps them.

– Now I have to be careful where I go and fly, where I have transfers, because many countries can extradite me to Russia under the Interpol agreement. (…) I hope that the European Union will not extradite me. It would be strange – his statement in turn “Rzeczpospolita”. During the conversation with RMF FM, he emphasized:

However, I think that Poland will not extradite me, especially since I am a Polish citizen.

Vyrypaev has been trying to give up his Russian citizenship for a long time, which is a long and complicated process. It requires, among others, certificate from the court that he is not accused of anything – the latest sentence probably torpedoes his efforts. The situation is also difficult because one of the director’s two sons from previous marriages is still in Russia. The family of the artist’s ex-wife supports Putin.

Ivan Vyrypaev was born on August 3, 1974 in Irkutsk. There he graduated from a theater school, then studied directing at the Theater Institute in Moscow. The drama “Sny” brought him fame, he also wrote such works as “The City Where I”, “Valentynki”, “Oxygen” or “July” and “Dance”. He has a daughter with Karolina Gruszka.
