Mary Alexopoulou was one of the biggest stars of the Greek music scene in the 1960s and 1970s. In her home country, she also developed an acting career – she played in two films. She delighted with her voice and attracted beauty, in her youth she even took part in the Miss pageant. Her hits were known not only in Greece. Hits like “I Bambola” were hummed across Europe. All of Europe knew her songs. A family tragedy made her quit her career
The artist’s career was interrupted by the tragic death of a member of her family. Mary Alexopoulou’s 18-year-old daughter died in a car accident. The 42-year-old abandoned the stage for the habit. She decided to consecrate herself to God and enter a convent. She took the name Theonymfa, chose the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Koropi, where she stayed until the last moments of her life.
“I preferred to be close to God, nothing else mattered to me. How to sing and dance when these things happened to you? I have never regretted becoming a nun – in 2022 in one of the interviews. Mary Alexopoulou was 79 years old. She spent the last 37 years of her life in a monastery in Koropi.

Her musical career began in 1966 when she met Kostas Klavass, one of the most popular and talented Greek composers. In the same year, thanks to the song “Panigyri”, she won the Thessaloniki competition.
This collaboration resulted in hugely successful hits in Greece and eventually international fame with the song “I Bambola”, the Greek version of the Italian hit “La bambola”. Mary Alexopoulou, however, did not limit herself to the music scene, as she appeared in two productions: “Night Wanderers” and “Fifis the Untouchable”.
