Tom Hanks strongly about the censorship of books under today’s standards. “We are adults”

First, changes in the novels of Agatha Christie and Roald Dahl. Then came Ian Fleming and many other authors. Censoring books as part of adapting their content to modern standards is becoming more and more common, at the same time causing an avalanche of controversy. The case was recently commented on by the American actor Tom Hanks.

Social media has been flooded with comments this year after it became known that the James Bond books by Ian Fleming would be reissued. All this to “remove content that is not relevant to today”, as in the novel by Agatha Christie and Roald Dahl – he reports. Among the readers there were opponents of this practice. One of them is the American actor Tom Hanks.

“Let me decide”

In an interview with the BBC, the American star confessed that he did not agree to modify books just to better fit modern standards. – I believe that we are adults and we should understand that some novels were written in other times, which had different standards than today. Let’s have faith in our own sensitivity here, instead of making someone else decide what is and what is not offensive to us. So let me decide what offends me, and what does not. I am opposed to a book from any era being re-edited for political correctness,” said Tom Hanks in an interview with BBC Radio 4.

Boycott

The discussion continues since the modification of the content of books has become more and more common, also among the classics of world literature. In February 2023, the British publisher Puffin stated that the latest edition of Roald Dahl’s children’s books will be “improved” to meet current standards. – The words “fat” and “ugly” were to disappear from the text. The publisher’s decision was met with a large wave of criticism. Ultimately, two versions of Dahl’s work were published: the original and censored, in line with political correctness.

Tom Hanks strongly opposes this type of interference in what is already a form of censorship. The American actor, who some time ago made his debut with the novel “The Making of another major motion picture masterpiece: a novel”, announced that he intends to boycott publishers that will change the content of books published in previous years.
