When choosing a name for a child, some parents choose the classics and choose traditional names, such as Katarzyna, Anna or Zuzanna, which has been popular in recent years. Others, in turn, are inspired by the names of their favorite series and movie characters. Some people, on the other hand, choose English-language names. However, there may be a problem with some of them when registering at the registry office.
They wanted to give their daughter a name associated with a cake. They encountered a problem
The registry office may refuse to register a name in a few cases. According to Polish law, children cannot be called diminutives. Only full forms of names are allowed. It is also forbidden to give hurtful names, i.e. forms that are ridiculing or indecent. There are also problems with names that do not clearly indicate the sex of the child.
Recently, the name Charlotte has been very popular in Poland, and girls with this name are diminutively called Szarlotka. However, it turns out that there are still problems with giving this name in the registry office. – Some time ago I came across a text about the problems with giving girls the name Inka. My husband and I had a similar situation. We recently welcomed a daughter into the world, whom we wanted to name Charlotte from the beginning. Although we have already met several “Szarlotki” in Poland, we were refused registration, explaining that it is not a Polish name. After a long conversation with several officials, we got our way, but I didn’t think it would be so problematic – one of our readers wrote to us.
What is the position of the Polish Language Council on this matter?
Parents who have doubts about names seek help from the Polish Language Council. One of the correspondents asked Council members for their opinion on the possibility of naming the girl after Charlotte.
The head of the Registry Office may refuse to register the name Charlotte for your daughter because it does not indicate the sex of the child. An additional obstacle to accepting it is the difference between its spelling and pronunciation
– replied the secretary of the Council, Dr. Katarzyna Kłosińska.
