Oscar-nominated film editor John Refoua has died. The creator worked on both parts of James Cameron’s record-breaking Avatar. He was 58 years old.

Refou’s death was announced by his wife, Serena. “My brilliant, charming, creative husband passed away on May 14,” the statement reads. The creator passed away surrounded by friends and family. “Despite the pain of his illness, he faced it with courage and perseverance. Everything he touched changed for the better,” Serena quotes.

In the spring of 2022, the filmmaker was diagnosed with a rare form of bile duct cancer. The disease developed very quickly. The cancer was so aggressive that the editor could not wait for the premiere of the third part of the cult “Avatar”.

The filmmaker reached the peak of his career in 2009, when the effect of his collaborations with James Cameron and Stephen E. Rivkin was released in cinemas. The reliable trio received an Oscar nomination for editing in “Avatar.” Refoua also returned to his role in Avatar: The Essence of Water, which was also a hit. He also worked on productions such as “CSI: Miami”, “Transformers: The Last Knight”, “Law & Order”, “Touched by an Angel” and “Twin Peaks”.

The wife of the late artist pointed out that until the last weeks of his life, Refoua was working on the next part of “Avatar”. The third installment of the great hit is to hit cinemas at the end of 2024, unfortunately, the creator will not be able to celebrate its premiere.

Refoua has been nominated for several prestigious awards such as Oscar, BAFTA and American Cinema Editors awards. In 2010, he received the Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, and the year before he was presented with the Phoenix Film Critics Society Award. The creator was also a member of the American Cinema Editors organization associating the best editors of the American film industry.
