Pauline Yvonne Parker and Juliet Hulme met when they were 12 and 13 years old. The girls had an extraordinary friendship. They were close enough to be suspected of being homosexual (which was considered a mental illness at the time). Just a few years later, they were behind one of the greatest of the 20th century. Together they planned and carried out the murder of the mother of one of them.
It was more than friendship. The story of teenagers has shocked the world
Pauline was born on May 26, 1938 in New Zealand. Juliet, in turn, moved to this country 10 years later. The girls developed a deep relationship. They often spent the night at each other’s place, spent holidays together and he was practically inseparable. They have created their own religion together with a pantheon of saints and a parallel world resembling heaven. Both loved art and literature. They spent their free time writing scripts for plays or stories.
In 1954, Juliet’s life turned into huge complications. Her father had to resign from his position as chancellor of the University of Canterbury in Christchurch. He also discovered that his wife had not been faithful to him. They decided to return to England, and their daughter was to live with a family living in South Africa. The vision of separation devastated the girls. They decided to move to another continent together. But Pauline had no doubt that her mother would not approve. According to friends, a woman was the only obstacle standing in the way of living together. So they decided on her.
On June 22, 1954, they met for a walk through Victoria Park in Christchurch. There they attacked Pauline’s mother and killed her with a brick wrapped in a stocking. They ran all over the place to the coffee shop. The teenagers explained that the woman fell and hit her head. The police quickly discovered the truth. The high-profile trial ended with a 5-year prison sentence for both perpetrators.
Their story inspired Peter Jackson. “Heavenly Creatures” became a hit
After leaving prison, they lived in different countries. Juliet moved in with her father in Italy. Pauline moved to the small town of Hoo in England. Both changed their names. Juliet Hulme named herself Anne Perry, and her friend became Hilary Nathan. The first of them developed the desired literary career. Her detective novels were very popular. Pauline focused on helping others. She ran a riding school and took care of children with disabilities.
The story of the girls was filmed by Peter Jackson. The director set about creating the film together with his partner Fran Walsh. After auditioning 175 young actresses, Kate Winslet was cast as Juliet, while Melanie Lynskey landed the role of Pauline just two weeks before production began. The movie turned out to be a hit. “Heavenly Creatures” was appreciated by the American Film Academy and nominated for an Oscar.
