Ahead of us is communion in the family. My aunt’s daughter joins the sacrament, so as the closest family, my husband and I received an invitation. Of course, this has been the number one topic for several weeks now… My mother recently told me that it’s going to be a really lavish party. So everyone around brags about how much they put in the envelope or what they buy. I even heard that less than PLN 1,000 is not appropriate to give. A minimum of PLN 1,000 for a communion envelope? It’s kind of absurd.
I’m thinking of refusing to come. My husband and I don’t earn much, so this expense is a big problem for us. We also got an invitation to a wedding in September. Now we face a difficult choice – if we decide to go to both celebrations and put 1000 zlotys in each envelope, we can forget about holidays this year. I know they say everyone should put as much as they can in an envelope, but… Well, I just don’t want to feel awkward.
