A minimum of PLN 1,000 for a communion envelope? “I wonder if I should refuse to come”

First communions and weddings are often a considerable financial burden, and ever-higher expectations of gifts make people embarrassing. – Ahead of us is communion in the family. Everyone around brags about how much they will put in the envelope or what they will buy. I even heard that less than PLN 1,000 is not appropriate. My husband and I don’t earn much, so such an expense is a big problem for us – reveals Paula.

How much should I put in a communion envelope? Every year this topic returns like a boomerang and evokes a lot of emotions. – We should put in exactly as much as we can afford. There is no such thing as rates, like forks for a plate. (…) It is good manners to deny yourself some small pleasure in order to give a loved one a generous gift. Generosity, however, will be PLN 50 for some, and PLN 20,000 for others – explained Aleksandra Pakuła, an etiquette expert on her Instagram. But people make up their theories all the time, often confusing others with them. One of our readers contacted us about this.

“A minimum of PLN 1,000 for a communion envelope? After all, this is absurd”

Ahead of us is communion in the family. My aunt’s daughter joins the sacrament, so as the closest family, my husband and I received an invitation. Of course, this has been the number one topic for several weeks now… My mother recently told me that it’s going to be a really lavish party. So everyone around brags about how much they put in the envelope or what they buy. I even heard that less than PLN 1,000 is not appropriate to give. A minimum of PLN 1,000 for a communion envelope? It’s kind of absurd.

I’m thinking of refusing to come. My husband and I don’t earn much, so this expense is a big problem for us. We also got an invitation to a wedding in September. Now we face a difficult choice – if we decide to go to both celebrations and put 1000 zlotys in each envelope, we can forget about holidays this year. I know they say everyone should put as much as they can in an envelope, but… Well, I just don’t want to feel awkward.

Paul.
