Samantha Meave Pearson outside the Niagara Fallsview Casino was collecting rent – along with a karaoke speaker, she had been singing outside the building on and off for over a year. The 26-year-old was born in Hamilton and admits that she has always been fascinated by music. She even tried to make some career steps in this field, but they did not go as well as she would like. Although she felt a bit burned out, the need to perform was stronger.
She sang in front of the casino, while auditions for “Mam Talent” were taking place inside. She reached the final
Samantha moved to Thorold, Ontario and started singing in front of a casino. After a few months she had to take a break, but five months ago she returned to performing at her favorite venue. Until the day came when her usual spot was taken by someone else. Undeterred, she chose a new place – she sat right in front of the entrance to the casino, where, quite by chance, auditions for “Mam Talent” were taking place that day. And it so happened that one of the judges of the show – comedian Howie Mandel – stopped to listen to her – reports CBC.
Meave wasn’t aware of what was going on at the casino, and she definitely didn’t expect anyone on the show to hear her: “I was there because I needed rent money,” she says. Mandel, meanwhile, went out in front of the casino, because he heard that there was actually someone singing in front of the building and hoped that the jurors would question him. Then he found Meave.
Mandel takes his juror duties very seriously. He listened to a girl singing in the street, put five American dollars in her hat, and then got down to business. He clearly liked what he heard, because the 26-year-old heard from him that she could audition with him and immediately sing in front of the rest of the judges on stage.
“I didn’t think something like this would happen to me in a million years,” she later told CBC. And in fact, a moment later she stood in front of the judges of “Mam Talent” and sang a capella the song “House of the Rising Sun” by Animals. She sang without a backing track, because things were so dynamic that there was no time to get everything done. Nevertheless, the dynamic course of events, according to Meave herself, turned out to be “rather a blessing than a curse” – it gave her less time to think and stress.
The rest of the jurors, although they were initially skeptical about the whole incident, also liked her performance, because she got four “yes”. She even went through the semi-finals of “Mam Talent” with flying colors – then she captivated everyone with her interpretation of the song “You Oughta Know” by Alanis Morissette. “It’s something I’ve dreamed of for as long as I can remember,” she says. Now she is one of the eight finalists of the program and has a real chance to win – everything will be decided on Tuesday, May 16 at 8 pm local time (2 am in Poland).
Regardless of the outcome, Meave emphasizes that the whole adventure has given her a lot of self-confidence and developed a lot creatively: “I feel that this is only the beginning and there is no other option than to keep growing,” she assures. She has already started releasing new songs. If he wins, he will receive 150,000. dollars and will have a chance to appear in the American edition of “America’s Got Talent Presents: SUPERSTARS Live” in Las Vegas – just like our Sara James.
