In 2022, the Eurovision Song Contest was won by Ukraine. According to tradition, this is where the next edition of the competition should take place. Unfortunately, due to the ongoing war, it was not possible, and the role of hosts was taken over by Great Britain.
Eurovision 2023. They reunited with Kiev: the most touching moment of the competition
Even though Ukraine was unable to host this year’s Eurovision, there were plenty of references to the country in Liverpool. What caught the eye the most during the entire duration of the final of the competition were the colors of the leading dresses in the colors of the Ukrainian flag.
Songs referring to peace and unity also resounded on the stage. We heard “Imagine” and the song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” from the musical “Carousel” from 1945, which was performed on stage by Duncan Laurence, the winner of the Eurovision Song Contest 2019 from the Netherlands. The song gained immense popularity in the UK after being recorded by the band Gerry and the Pacemakers, soon becoming the anthem of Liverpool.
The song has very moving lyrics that encourage you to fight and believe in a better tomorrow even in the worst circumstances. “When you go through a storm, keep your head high and don’t be afraid of the dark, because at the end of the storm, a golden sky awaits” – when the words resounded on the Eurovision stage, Ukraine was connected. On the screens you could see Ruslana Łyżyczko (Ukrainian singer, winner of Eurovision in 2004) surrounded by the inhabitants of a country at war, who waved blue and yellow flags with joy and hope in their hearts and loudly sang words that were so important to them.
This is by far the most touching moment of the Eurovision final. Tears could not be held back by both those present in the audience and the host. Both Hannah Waddingham and TV presenter Graham Norton wiped their faces.
