In order to win, you need to collect as many points as possible for your performance. And points are awarded not only by professional jurors from all Member States. A lot depends on how viewers vote. In 2023, there was an important change in the rules and for the first time in the history of the contest, viewers from all over the world can vote – previously only residents of Europe and countries participating in Eurovision could do it.
How to vote in Eurovision?
Under the new rules, participants in the Eurovision final will receive points from three different tranches. The first is the score awarded by the judges from the countries participating in the competition. Each jury consists of five members who must have well-documented musical or artistic experience. The judges will evaluate the composition and originality of the song, the quality of the performance of the song on the concert stage, the vocal abilities of the artists and the overall impression of the performance. The judges can award from 1 to 8 points to the finalists they choose, and the best ones in their opinion receive 10 or 12 points respectively. It is this score from the international judges from all 37 participating in the competition that will be read out during the broadcast of the final by journalists from individual countries.
The second pool is points from viewers from Europe. Here, the scale is distributed analogously – each of the Member States can award a total of 58 points. It often happens that the votes of the viewers completely overturned the order in the table and decided about an overwhelming victory. This year, there will be additional points awarded by viewers from the rest of the world, which can mess up the table even more – it will be interesting for sure.
How exactly can you vote in Eurovision? The organizers encourage you to download the official application of the competition – this is available for both Android and iOS phones. Another option is the website, a new website www.esc.vote that all viewers can use. The next option is telephone voting – you can call or send an SMS with the number of your favorite to the number provided by the television broadcasting the final in a given country. In Poland it is 73555. Each viewer can cast up to 20 votes, but they must remember that a micropayment will be charged for each vote. The money collected in this way will be used to organize the next edition of Eurovision.
Voting will start only after the last of the finalists has sung and will last approximately 40 minutes. At the casa, when viewers watch the additional artistic program, the votes will be counted and then read out after the judges’ verdicts are announced.
