Why is Australia at Eurovision 2023? The spectators of the competition are confused

Why is Australia at Eurovision 2023? This is a question that started to be repeated on the Internet after the second semi-final of the international competition. The spectators of the competition rightly notice that according to their geographical knowledge, Australia is not located in Europe.

The name suggests that the competition is intended for musicians from our continent. However, this is not entirely true. Any public broadcaster that is an active member of the European Broadcasting Union has the opportunity to participate in the competition. This means that it is not the location of the country that qualifies for the competition. Many non-European countries have participated in the spectacle over the years.

Eurovision 2023. Who can take part in the competition?

In Eurovision, for years we have admired the performances of transcontinental countries, which only part of the area belongs to Europe – these include Turkey, Russia, Georgia and Azerbaijan. From beyond the borders of our continent, the Eurovision stage also featured representatives of Israel, Armenia, Cyprus, Morocco and the most questionable Australia, which is a separate continent in itself. No wonder that after the performance in the second semi-finals of the Voyager group, questions arose in the network about the presence of this country in the competition.

Eurovision 2023. Why is Australia participating in the contest?

The history of Australia at Eurovision dates back to 2015, when the EBU invited the country to the jubilee edition of the contest. The idea was the result of over 30 years of cooperation between the European Broadcasting Union and SBS. Then the local selected a representative for the competition for the first time. It was Guy Sebastian with the song “Tonight Again”. Since then, the country has participated in the competition six times, but has never managed to take first place. The highest marks in the history of the competition were won by Dami Im, who represented Australia in the 2016 competition with the song “Sound of Silence”. As the statistics show, the representatives of the country have enjoyed a lot of sympathy among Poles for years. During the last five editions of the competition, our country gave as many as 60 votes to the Australians, only Sweden was more generous.

Interestingly, there are also countries that have the opportunity to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest, but have never decided to express their desire to participate. These include Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya and the Vatican. We would like to remind you that the final will start on May 13 at 21:00 Polish time. The representative of Poland – with the song “Solo” – will perform in the competition as the fourth.
